8. Dichpally Ramalayam
DICHPALLY RAMALAYAM

The Dichpally Ramalayam or Khilla Ramalayam is believed to have been built around the 14th Century A.D during the Kakatiya times. The temple is small and does not have the usual grandeur of South Indian temples.

An unfinished temple?

The Ramalayam must have been an unfinished one because it seems the temple did not have idols till the late 1940s, several centuries after it was built ! A local devotee installed marble idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman in 1947. So what could have been the story of the Dichpally Ramalayam?

There is an old watch tower adjacent to the temple, another view point. We caught this lonely ancient mandapa in the middle of a nearby tank.

Was there a fort here in ancient times? Is that why the Ramalayam is also called Khilla (Fort) Ramalayam?

9. Archaeological and Heritage Museum

During the 8th century, the town was under the reign of Indra Vallabha Panthya Vasrha Indra Som who belonged to the Rashtrakuta Dynasty. The place was named Indhrapuri after the king. However, with the construction of a railway line between the cities of Secunderabad and Manmad, a new railway station was added – the Nizamabad railway station. The station was named after Nizam-ul-Mulk who was the then ruler of the region. Since Nizamabad was an important railway station connecting Hyderabad with Mumbai, the name of the place was changed from Indhrapuri to Nizamabad.

Nizamabad enjoyed its golden period during the reign of Nizam-ul-Mulk who ruled the region for long years. He was a great patron of art and architecture and consequently built many religious institutions in the area including mosques and Hindu temples.

There are many towns and villages that come under the Nizamabad district including Armuru, Bodhan, Banswada, Kamareddy and many more. Located in the town of Bodhan is the Nizam Sugar Factory that was once known as the biggest such factory in the whole of Asia.

The festival of Rathasapthami is annually celebrated on a grand scale during this temple.

11. Siddula Gutta, Armoor

From Dichpally, the NH7 goes straight towards Nizamabad, instead, we took a deviation towards Armoor. Armoor, is 25 kms from Dichpally and 27 kms from Nizamabad. On the map, Dichpally, Armoor and Nizamabad form a triangle!

Armoor, a small town, has some very interesting hills. The hills look like massive pile of black rocks ! There are some deep caverns between these rocks. The place is also called Siddula Gutta (Sages’ hillock) because it is believed sages meditated in those caves.

The Siddeshwar temple is a small temple with Lord Shiva as the presiding deity. The history of the temple is unknown but it has been renovated completely and the present structure is relatively new. A word of caution, beware of monkeys !

More than the temple, the most interesting part of Siddula Gutta is a cave inside which there is a Siva Linga.

The Khustapuram project proposal was first mooted/investigated by erstwhile Hyderabad state under Nizam rule to utilize 227 thousand million cubic feet (tmc) of upper Godavari river water. This dam site is located in the Nizamabad district of Telangana State after the confluence of Manjira river with Godavari. Under stage I of this project nearly 1 million acres (4,000 km2) irrigation facility is created to utilize 140 tmc water. Stage II of this project is under advanced stage of construction to irrigate 440,000 acres (1,800 km2) using 25 tmc water. The flood flow canal project is also under implementation to irrigate 200,000 acres (810 km2) using 20 tmc water available at Pochampadu dam site. The live storage capacity of SS dam is limited to 90 tmc to reduce submergence area in Maharashtra up to FRL level 1,091 feet (333 m) above mean sea level as per the agreement between Maharashtra & Telangana. As of August 2013, the project has an estimated capacity of 80.66 TMC.

Located about 7 K.Ms. away from Nizamabad town, the old Jankampet cheruvu (lake) with its foreshore covered with jungle growth, infested with rodents, snakes, filth and garbage has now been converted into an attractive destination. This is situated on the route to the famous Saraswathi temple at Basar from Hyderabad. The transformation in just (6) months from November 2001 to a beautiful rock garden with illuminated rocks and boating facilities by May,2002 has been phenomenal. Asok Sagar now boasts of excellent boating facilities with two (18) seater boats, two (4) seater speed boats, four (4) pedal boats, a restaurant, beautiful rocks, exquisite landscapes and excellent garden.

The old polluting environment has been converted into an aesthetic place blending harmoniously with the beautiful natural settings of huge rock boulders. The fifteen feet marble statue of Godess Saraswathi, in the middle of the lake, gives a breath taking view in moon lit nights. This unique statue kept in a unique location has won many admirers. The pagoda topped, octagonal shaped "Asok Sagar Restaurant" is beautiful because of its shape, size and color! It is a three tier restaurant-- open air restaurant on the top; cozy, glass paneled formal restaurant in the middle and the "water level"  restaurant at the bottom.

The swing rope way  entry is another USP of the area. There is an amphitheater, with huge rocks forming a magnificant back drop. The Childrens' park  is a huge crowd puller.

The ancient Laxmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Janakampet, about 10 km from here, is getting a facelift.
The `Ashtamukhi koneru' at the Laxminarasimha Swamy temple at Jankampet near Nizamabad.
The temple constructed during the 18th Century by Samarth Ramdas, guru of the Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji, was almost in ruins when the devotees of Laxmi Narasimha decided to take up renovation works.

The devotees used to visit Dharmapuri in Karimnagar district where the famous Laxmi Narasimha temple is located on the banks of Godavari. The businessmen from town then approached the Assistant Commissioner, Endowments, E. Srinivas, and urged him to take steps to retain the temple's past glory.

The historic temple has the unique distinction of having the `Ashthamukhi koneru', the only one of its kind in entire south India. The district administration has released Rs. 5.40 lakhs to lay a cement concrete road up o the temple.

The business community of Nizamabad town pooled money to the tune of Rs. 3 lakhs to take up renovation of the temple, lay new tiles, strengthen the temple walls and clean the `Ashthamukhi koneru'. The Sri Ramalayam built on a three-acre site during the Nizam period at Shakkar Nagar in Bodhan town is worth a visit. A feature of this temple is its main entrance which is from the western side and not the normal east.

In the heyday of the Nizam Sugar Factory a number of devotees used to visit the temple daily but now it has fallen on bad days and it was now surviving on hundi collections. Weddings are performed at the Kalyanamandapam attached to the temple. The garden spread over one acre is also a special attraction here.

The garden adds additional charm to this temple where Sri China Jeeyar Swami performed his hundredth Mahayagnam some years ago. A plaque is there reminding his ‘yagnam'. There is a mosque right opposite the temple, but there has never been any communal tension. The temple is reminder of the religious tolerance of the then rulers.

Shiva Temple was built by kings in the Kakatiya Dynasty. The Shiva Temple is one of the many Temples in Bangalore India. You will find a Shiva Lingam, the projection of Hindu Lord Shiva. The temple also has a statue of lord Shiva in a yoga posture that is 65 feet high.] It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built in the Kakatiyan style of architecture. The temple stands on a 3-foot (0.91-metre) platform. An intricately carved statue of Nandi, the vāhana or mount of Lord Shiva, stands outside the temple in an open area. Unlike other temples, there is no flag mast in front of it because it has no gopuram (temple tower).

Very recently, the stone temple was completely disassembled and restored. It has a large shiva lingam, considered an embodiment of Lord Shiva, with its guarding presence by the Nandi (Bull). The lingam was carved from a single stone. The temple is elevated from ground level by many rock beds beneath it. The temple roof stands on eighteen carved stone pillars.

This fort is more popular as “Gadi Domakonda” also “Killa Domakonda” and this once palatial mahal inside is populary known as “Addhala Meda” (Glass house). The courtyard of this beautiful bungalow is graced with a masonry water garden pond and iron hooked rounded granite pillars drilled into earth around its circumference as a guard to this pond.

The ground floor has arched pillars with finely done stucco work, illustrating its influenced design to the Mughal architecture. The first floor perching on the ground floor is modeled with round pillars and above it a flat ceiling, borrowing its design from the Western architecture. The ceilings of the floor are done with wood supported by rectangular wooden beams. Notably, Umapathi Rao is the official owner of Domakonda fort.
